Send flowers to Taiwan
The Asian state of Taiwan is off the Chinese coast and was permanently settled some 8,000 years ago, although remains of earlier cultures have been found.
The capital city, Taipei, is an intriguing mix of the ancient and the modern, the traditional and the cutting-edge. One of the most visited cities on the planet, it has numerous attractions. Among them are undoubtedly the many temples, whether Buddhist or Taoist, although one of the delights is stumbling across any of the many roadside temples and shrines. They may be less ostentatious than the more famous ones, but they give a different view of the importance religion has always had here.
For a bird’s-eye view of the city, one has to visit Taipei 101, at one time the world’s tallest building. The observation decks and shopping malls are great attractions, as are the fireworks on New Year’s Eve.
Apart from the capital, other cities worth visiting are Kaohsiung and Taichung. But Taiwan has much more to offer, from the 90 islets of the Penghu region to the stunning landscape of the Central Mountain Range.
