What do you need?
It’s best to get everything ready before you start so that your centrepieces look fresh and ready for the big event, whether that is a wedding, a party or just as a decoration for your home or garden! Here is what we suggest you should use:
- Glass jars or bottles, any size or style will work, just make sure they’re clean!
- Spray paint
- Shears (scissors will also do the job well)
This time, we leave the choice of flowers completely up to you! You can choose the flowers you want to mix and match, perhaps to match a colour scheme or maybe even something as simple as using some of your favourite flowers.
- Seasonal flowers of your choice!
We do suggest that you use seasonal flowers though, as that way you can get the freshest look for your centrepiece. It’s also a good idea to get a range of bright colours, and some greenery to act as a filler for the arrangement and pad out your mini-bouquet a bit.
Once all of that is ready, we can begin to get going!
Step 1 – Prepare the jars or bottles
Strip the jars of any paper or glue. Running it under some hot water and scrubbing it will usually do the job if you can’t get it all off with your hands. Then make sure that they are dry before you begin the next step to get the best effects from the paint.
Step 2 – Paint the jars or bottles
Most importantly, start by covering your mouth and nose before painting. Then spray paint the jars. It’s best to put some newspaper or material down on the floor around the area where you will spray paint, and be wary not to do it anywhere that you wouldn’t want to get paint! Outside is best.
To get the best centrepieces possible, try to paint inside as well as out as much as you can. This way, if the paint on the outside is chipped it won’t make such a big difference.
Step 3 – Leave to dry
To get the best results, leave the jars to dry. If possible, it’s best to do this outside so that the paint doesn’t drip anywhere that you don’t want it to. Try to avoid getting them wet in any other way, so keep an eye on the weather and avoid leaving them out in the rain or the paint will run off! This step is also important as it will stop the paint getting on to the flowers, not only damaging them but also giving them an unnatural colour!
Step 4 – Make your flower arrangement
As mentioned previously, use whatever flowers you feel are best for this! Put them all together so that they overlap slightly, this way the mini-bouquet and your centrepiece will feel full and overflowing in fresh flowers.
The more colours and bright flowers the better, as it will make the flowers and the centrepiece stand out and look impressive on the eye. Don’t forget to fill out your mini-bouquet with some greenery to add to the effect of a full centrepiece.
If you are still waiting for your jars or bottles to dry, it can be useful to tie a rubber band around the stems of the flowers in order to keep them together.
Step 5 – Put them all together
Next up, we can put the two separate parts together by putting your beautiful mini-bouquet into one of your freshly painted jars. Be careful to check that the paint has dried before you do this to stop any risk of covering your flowers in paint. Be gentle as you put the flowers into the jar in order to keep them in the best condition possible.
Step 6 – Take care and enjoy!
Now that your centrepiece is complete, all you have to do is take care of it and maintain it! While this may not be of major importance if you only want to use the centrepiece for a one off occasion, it will be a useful tip if you want to keep one as a decoration at home.
It’s best to keep them in daylight as much as possible and put some water into the bottom of the jar, to keep them looking fresh, just like you would with any other flowers in a vase.
When some of the flowers do eventually begin to wilt, it’s best to replace them with other fresh flowers and keep them going. If you slowly replace the flowers as they begin to wilt, it will ensure that you will always have fresh flowers in your centrepiece so that it can stay looking great for a long time!
