As the spring flowers start to pop up as the weather gets warmer we move into the beginning of high season for flower festivals. It’s not just the bestselling flowers like roses and lilies that steal the show. Throughout the northern hemisphere newly grown flowers are celebrated as master gardeners, and mother nature herself, treat us to the wonder that fresh blooms can bring in one of the many spectacular flower festivals happening in spring.
We’ve picked a few favourites from around the globe:
Hanami Festival (Japan)
Easily one of the most popular flower festivals in the world is the infamous Hanami national cherry blossom festival which takes place between the end of March and early May when the entire country briefly turns pink. The name Hanami itself means “flower viewing” and is a tradition the Japanese have followed for centuries. Nowadays people normally gather in parks with large picnics and sit beneath these beautiful colourful trees to enjoy the floral majesty of this time of year.
Hanami au Parc de Sceaux (France)
If you’re thinking that Japan is a bit to far away and expensive to travel to then maybe one of the many European alternatives may suit better. One great option is to pay a visit to Parc de Sceaux just outside Paris where the gardens on the 15th of April pay homage to their Japanese counterparts with their own beautiful blossoms.
Chelsea Flower Show (United Kingdom)
The Chelsea Flower Show run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is held between May 22nd and 26th. Here you can find some of the most elaborate and painstakingly created designs in the world as master gardeners from around the globe to display their amazing works of floral art.
Girona Flower Festival (Spain)
Girona may be overshadowed by nearby Barcelona for most of the year but that changes every year from the 12th to 20th of May during the annual Temps de Flors as the city becomes filled with beautiful floral designs. People come from all over Spain and the world to see the majestic fresh flowers of the festival set against the Gothic architecture of this ancient city.
Keukenhof Tulip and Flower Festival (Holland)
Holland was one of the first countries to pioneer commercial flower growth and this heritage is recognised every year with the annual Spring Garden between March 22nd and May 13th in the grounds of Keukenhof Castle. Here the garden boasts around 7 million spring flowering bulbs and displays prepared by nearly 500 flower growers.
Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival (USA)
It may be a little hard to believe but one of America’s biggest flower festivals takes place in Disney World Resort in Florida in the Epcot centre between February 28th to May 28th. The Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival is a fantastic festival to visit if you are both a fan of beautiful flowers and Disney. The gardens feature expertly designed topiaries of many of your favourite Disney characters and films.
These are unsurprisingly just a few of the many big and small flower festivals taking part in Spring 2018, with many smaller spring flower festivals being found dotted around countries everywhere as nature revives from its long winter rest. Which of our choices will you attend this year?
