The city of Banská Bystrica lies in central Slovakia on the Hron River, and is the seat of administration of the homonymous Slovakian region. The former Slavic settlement of Bystrica was an ore mining community. Thanks to its development, royal recognition and the city charter were granted in 1255 by King Béla IV of Hungary.
