The area was originally only a few scattered farms and cottages that were linked by winding country roads. However this soon changed when the Cadbury’s needed to move their expanding chocolate factory. In 1879 they moved the business to Bournbrook Hall, as this area, although rural, was easily accessible by rail as well as situated next to the canal. Two necessary things for the shipment of supplies. The Cadbury’s then named the place Bournville after the Bournbrook Hall and the french word ville meaning town. They then began to develop their factory in the new neighborhood. In 1893 George Cadbury bought 120 acres of land close to the factory and planned a model village. By 1900 the estate included 313 cottages and houses set over 330 acres. The design of these houses was modern and unique for its time and was copied in housing throughout Europe. The Cadbury's were very concerned with the health of their employees so they build many parks and recreation areas throughout the neighborhood. They often encouraged walking, swimming or any kind of outdoor sport. Because of this the neighborhood to this day is strewn with idyllic recreation areas. This model village is a popular tourist attraction due to the Cadbury history and beautiful design.
