5 Super Romantic Movies To Watch This Valentine’s Day

February 14th is the perfect opportunity to put on a good love film. The only problem is there’ are hundreds, if not thousands to choose from. If you’re struggling to choose which romantic movies to watch this Valentine’s Day, we’re going to give you a hand. We’ve chosen five films that for us are a cut above the rest.

The films on our list capture the highs, lows and, of course, emotions that love brings out in all of us. However, before we begin, let’s just address one gigantic omission from the list, that may prove controversial.

Love Actually isn’t on the list mainly because it’s a Christmas film. Also, given the backlash it’s suffered recently we thought it might be better to pick some other (and we think better) love stories.

1. Brief Encounter

Brief Encounter is a little different from our other entries in that it deals primarily with an affair. Given that this film is nearly 75 years old this was quite a brave move in itself given the sensibilities of the time. However, it remains a classic story about how romance can appear anywhere at any time and has a wonderfully dramatic musical score featuring Rachmaninov’s piano concerto No 2 performed by Eileen Joyce.

2. An Officer and a Gentleman

An Officer and a Gentleman is an old fashioned tale of one man’s journey to better himself despite grueling odds and how he finds love on his way to it. Richard Gere and Deborah Winger’s romantic final scene together alone makes this modern classic worth the watch. It also has a killer soundtrack.

3. When Harry Met Sally

This famed romantic comedy asks us the question can men and women just be friends? With its simple tone and focus on a love that grows over the years due to several chance meetings and perfectly captures the elements that bring couples closer together with time.

4. Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind

This last entry on our list dips a little into the world of science fiction, with the focus on Joel (Jim Carrey) and the extreme steps he takes to forget his relationship with Clementine (Kate Winslet). It is a bittersweet look at how we struggle with our recollections in the midst of a recent breakup. It also lets us wonder if love can transcend the limitations of human memory itself.
