Another year is coming to an end and we wanted to look back at 2018 our regular annual retrospective. We’re remembering 2018 in flowers by assigning a plant or flower to each of the 12 months reflecting the events that happened in them.
Now, without any further ado, let’s see the 12 flowers we chose to represent the last twelve months.
January was a healthy month for Amazon chief Jeff Bezos, who became the richest man in modern history. With his fortune now north of $150 Billion (which is bigger than the GDP of Jamaica) we felt that a Chinese Money Plant would suit this month of 2018.
Red roses were an obvious choice for February. It’s the month of Valentine’s Day and the time when these expressive flowers really shine. For Valentine’s Day 2018 we sent out over 25,000 bouquets and of course, the majority of those were red roses naturally.
March 8th is, of course, International Women’s Day and one of the best flowers for this day is the yellow mimosa. It carries great symbolism in Italy on IWD and captures a little of the energy that the change in the seasons brings.
We’ve chosen bright yellow daffodils to mark April of this year. It was in this month that The Simpsons reached its record-breaking 636th episode. This makes it the longest-running scripted US primetime TV series after surpassing the previous record holder Gunsmoke.
There was, of course, the royal wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle in May and peonies played a big part in their big day. As the favourite flowers of the bride, they were picked especially to decorate St George’s Chapel in Windsor. We, of course, predicted big things for Peonies back in January 😉
These tulips suited the respective figures of Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, when the pair met in person for a historic summit between North Korea and The USA during May.
In July scientists discovered bright pink is the oldest biological colour. The colour was found in a 1.1 billion-year-old rock sample in Mauritania. It had originally been produced by an ancient bacteria. We, of course, wanted to commemorate that fact with the bright pink you can find in lilies.
It was another hot summer this year and it wouldn’t be right to remember the warm days and golden sun without marking the occasion with a few sunflowers.
This flower is a favourite for funerals and we chose it to reflect the many notable deaths and memorials that took place during the month including Bert Reynolds, John McCain and Aretha Franklin.
There was another big Wedding in October, this time between Princess Eugenie and Jack Brookbank. Among the flowers in her bridal bouquet was lily of the valley, which is a traditional flower for Royal Weddings.
We’ve chosen a beautiful purple flower for November as this of course was the month that the hotly anticipated film Bohemian Rhapsody debuted in cinemas.
To round off the year we’ve chosen a suitably Christmassy flower. Red Amaryllis is a great flower for the holidays and a subtle but strong way to profess your love.
