“Why should we celebrate International Women’s Day?” I hear you ask. Well, it’s a day for you to recognise all those wonderful women in your life, what they achieve and all that they do for you. Your girlfriend of course, but also your mother, grandparents and any other lady who puts a smile on your face. They are those rocks on who you can rely when everything else around you seems to be falling apart. They also have to put up with you and for that, they deserve a medal (or maybe just some flowers)!

The first officially celebrated International Women’s Day was in 1911 in 17 countries, as women protested for improved rights, pay and working conditions. It also gave impetuous to movements such as the suffragettes in the United Kingdom, which eventually secured the vote for women in 1918. Sylvia Pankhurst, a prominent member of the campaign, was in fact arrested in London whilst trying to give a speech on Women’s Day in 1913. Whilst women still don’t have complete equality, campaigns such as International Women’s Day have really played a part in levelling the playing field in our society.
